Retaining Hair Moisture During the Fall Season

You probably don’t have to be told that the weather this time of year can rob moisture from your hair, leaving your kinky coils and curls dry and brittle. If you want to avoid the breakage and crunch that the cooler air brings, you’ll have to change up your hair care routine for the next few months.

Say Goodbye to Sulfates
If you haven’t already, you’ll want to stop using the standard shampoos with sulfates that strip your hair of its natural moisture and nutrients. We recommend our Coconut Crème Shampoo, which cleanses and strengthens your hair, never strips it. It’s also formulated with aloe vera juice, that restores your hairs’ natural pH while it moisturizes

Condition, Seal and Deliver!
Deep Condition Weekly. Yes, weekly.
Deep conditioning is essential in maintaining healthy hair, and you’ll want to plan at least 30 minutes a week to do it right. Natural hair already gets dry very quickly, and now you don’t have the humidity to draw on.
Crank Up the Conditioner.
Keep your strands happy and healthy by using a creamy, moisture-rich conditioner after you shampoo. You’ll want something with the boost of olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil or avocado oil. Our Coconut Crème Conditioner with Mango Butter is a great follow-up to the Coconut Crème Shampoo, and the mango butter leaves your curls soft and smooth.
Seal your hair with Oil.
You really can’t ignore this part of the LOC process this time of year. If you don’t use an oil to “loc” in the moisture, you might as well not have started in the first place. Wash out the conditioner and spread the oil all over your curls. Our Grow Thick Oil not only locks in the moisture, but its packed with natural vitamins and omegas that will strengthen and help thicken your hair.

Preserve the Moisture
Wear a protective style.
Moisturizing and sealing is great. But protective styling protects your hair from being exposed to the elements by tucking your ends away. There are plenty of sporty and fun options for protective styles and they retain moisture and prevent breakage a lot better than loosely worn hair. I know it sounds crazy limiting, but once you’ve found a style that works for your texture and lifestyle, commit to it from anywhere to a week to three months. You can change it up again when it gets warmer.
Wear a Satin Bonnet under your winter hat.
I know, it’s already starting to get colder, but you need to be careful how you’re keeping your head warm. After all, you’ve done all this work to keep it moisturized and styled, why take any chances. The majority of winter head wear is made of wool, which actually sucks moisture out of your hair! A satin bonnet will protect the work you’ve done while you’re staying toasty.

Try a Hydrating Mist.

A great way to maintain moisture on a daily basis is by simply mixing your favorite leave-in. We recommend our Moisturizing Mist. Spraying this mixture on your hair morning and night for a quick moisture replenishment. Doing this daily will keep you hair hydrated especially during the fall & winter.

With the proper preparation and some minor adjustments, your fall and winter hair can look at feel as dynamic as your summer curls. And you’ll already be primed for when the warmer weather returns!
